GLASS

Anyone familiar with the glass world can tell you that in recent years the interest in art glass has become intense. Galleries exclusive to the medium of glass have opened word-wide; Serious collectors of glass have become numerous: Periodicals concentrating on the new trends in glass, as well as exhibitions, are being produced on a worldwide scale: And museums have made room for glass artists in their collections.

Glass ascended from a decorative, functional craft to a well respected, collectible medium. This did not happen overnight. The first University program devoted to glassblowing was begun by Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin in 1962. A student of Harvey Littleton, Dale Chihuly went on the teach at the Rhode Island School of Design and, in 1971, co-founded the Pilchuck School of Glass in Seattle, Washington. The Pilchuck School soon earned an incomparable reputation and established glass as a serious art form, and Seattle as an art glass center in the United States.

It is the Pilchuck School that has provided so much inspiration to so many of our artists. Dale Chihuly's concept was simple: Provide the best teachers and you will have quality students. Seattle and the surrounding areas now thrive with a network of innovative glass artists. Each of these artists was drawn to Seattle, attracted by the reputation of the Pilchuck School and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, to further themselves in the newly rediscovered medium of sculptural glass. The contribution of Chihuly's vision and the continued excellence of Pilchuk has resulted in one of the tightest networks' artists who share ideas, discoveries, and the pursuit of excellence and integrity in studio glass.

The Pacific Northwest artists represented is the result of intense study on the Pacific Northwest glass scene. Our artists were selected on the basis on their ingenuity, expertise, and the continuing contribution that each artist makes to contemporary art. Theirs is a concentration of sculptural forms, as opposed to the more commonly seen vessel-like functional works of glass.
