There was the language:

It was almost understandable so similar to familiar sounds but still elusive.And the LETTERS - Cyrilics -

Macedonia is the birthplace of the Cyrilic alphabet. Sveti Cyril and Sveti Metod made the first slavic letters here.

Reading became an incredible effort - She was illiterate in that case. She had no tongue.

She spent weeks not knowing where she was or where she was going. The street signs were in Cyrilics and in Macedonian (of course). Some of them had been changed when Macedonia gained independence, so people on the streets often didn't know the new street names either. Many of the old street signs were still up - though fading and peeling. And most of her maps were old.

She named places for herself - For example Marshal Tito Avenue had been renamed to something she could never remember (probably Goce Delcev)- She called it "the street with the stopped clock"
