There was the poverty or was it just transition?

The factories were closing down or laying off people.

The sugar factory was running at 20% of it's capacity - Sugar was hard to find on the shelves of the markets. Lots of people were out of work. She didn't get it.

At the market, she saw the people watching their denars carefully for every loaf of bread - especially the retired pensioneri

She met a young family forced to share one room for mother father child and baby

It seemed that many people didn't have jobs - (people from all classes and levels of education)

Every time she crossed the stone bridge, she saw gypsy babies begging - sometimes they would be with their mothers but usually they were alone- or they would be left bundled up by themselves sleeping on a piece of cardboard - She even saw a tiny baby crying in the cold wind one winter day - some of them were so small that they looked like dolls.

She saw children picking through the garbage
